The Traffic Unit of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department is primarily responsible for traffic law enforcement, collision investigation and traffic related criminal investigations. The Traffic Unit’s goal is to make the streets of Mammoth Lakes as safe as possible for the motoring public, bicyclists and pedestrians. The Traffic unit accomplishes this through its S.T.E.P. Program (Specific Traffic Enforcement Patrol). The S.T.E.P. program's primary focus is enforcement and education.

The Traffic Unit consists of one officer assigned to handle all traffic related issues. The traffic officer utilizes a handheld LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) device, visual estimation of speed and a camera and radar equipped “slick top” vehicle to enforcement  violations.  Currently the assignment is held by Officer David Scobie (pictured).

The Traffic Unit also uses a radar trailer as an educational tool to alert drivers of their speed in neighborhoods where citizens have identified speed violations. The radar trailer is also capable of gathering speed and traffic count data. This data allows us to analyze and focus enforcement in specific areas.
